Program Highlights 2024
Annual theme 2024: Abwesenheit | Absence
Numerous events in the Sigmund Freud Museum's 2024 program – conferences, exhibitions and screenings – will be dedicated to "Absence". This also includes a presentation by of our advisory board members, who will shed light on the topic with texts and a personal selection of images. The online presentation will be available on the website from early 2024.
Elsewhere – A Place for Your Dreams. Panel discussion and presentation of the app, January 25
Presentation of the smartphone app Elsewhere, which is more than just a dream diary for its users. Using artificial intelligence, it also helps to interpret dreams. It was developed by a team around Kelly Bulkeley, who was inspired by the "place of origin of psychoanalysis" at Berggasse 19. Discussion with Kelly Bulkeley (dream researcher), Brigitte Holzinger (dream psychologist) and Daru Huppert (psychoanalyst).
Narrating Violence. A Comic-Exhibition. Artist talk, February 15
On the occasion of the special exhibition "Narrating Violence. A Comic-Exhibition", an artist talk will take place with exhibition curator Marina Rauchenbacher and the authors and illustrators of Insekten, Regina Hofer and Leopold Maurer, whose work is also presented with original drawings in the "Shoah" section.
Fort-Da. Artistic interventions, March 21–June 10
In the framework of the thematic focus "Abwesenheit | Absence", the permanent museum collections will be opened to students of the University of Applied Arts, class of Prof. Judith Eisler (Painting & Animated Film). Twelve artistic interventions inscribe themselves into the place of origin of psychoanalysis with sculptures, paintings and installations, commenting on and interpreting it with regard to its historical development and current appearance.
Freud and Antiquity. Lecture series, summer semester
In cooperation with Prof. Georges Karamanolis, Head of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Vienna, a lecture series will take place on Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m. in the summer semester 2024. Its aim is to shed new light on Sigmund Freud's reception of antiquity: On the one hand, Freud's relationship to antiquity – literature, philosophy, religion, culture – will be examined. On the other hand, special attention will be paid to the extent to which Freud also used or overcame ancient philosophical concepts with the help of the conceptual apparatus of psychoanalysis.
Dori Laub, Psychoanalysis and Testimony – Invoking Presence Out of Absence. Conference, March 14 and 15
In cooperation between the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University and the Sigmund Freud Museum, a two-day conference on "Dori Laub, Psychoanalysis and Testimony" will take place under the direction of Stephen Naron, head of the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University, and Daniela Finzi (Sigmund Freud Museum). In memory of the Holocaust survivor and psychoanalyst Dori Laub (1937-2018), co-founder of the "Holocaust Survivors Film Project" (1979), discussions will take place with, among others: Françoise Davoine, Amit Pinchevski, Naomi Seidman, Ohad Ufaz and Jeanne Wolff Bernstein.
The Uncanny. Sigmund Freud and the Arts. Special exhibition, April 26 –November 4
The special exhibition "un:heimlich", a continuation of the collaboration with the Kunsthalle Tübingen (Germany), focuses on the "uncanny" in selected works by international artists Louise Bourgeois, Heidi Bucher, Gregory Crewdson, Robert Gober, Esther Shalev-Gerz, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Kai Walkowiak, and Francesca Woodman. At the same time, an installation by Austrian artist Stephanie Pflaum in the Showroom Berggasse 19 makes an impressive contribution to the artistic visualization strategies of this specific feeling of anxiety, to which Sigmund Freud dedicated a text in 1919.
Sigmund Freud Lecturer 2024: Homi K. Bhabha. Sigmund Freud Lecture, May 6
Homi K. Bhabha, one of the leading theorists of postcolonialism, will give the LI. Sigmund Freud Lecture on May 6, 2024 at 7 pm in the Reading Room of the Library of Psychoanalysis at the Sigmund Freud Museum.
Abwesenheit | Absence. Conference, October
Conceived together with the members of the advisory board Jeanne Wolff Bernstein and Victor Mazin, the conference is dedicated to the annual theme, which will be examined from a psychoanalytical, art and cultural studies, media studies, and political science perspective by international speakers (tba).
